Christmas on a Sunday? But…?

By Sky Holzinger in Arts and Culture in Deep Thoughts in Thinking About Sunday on 12/21/11

Once every 7 years or so, Christmas falls on a Sunday. Having gone to church myself every Sunday for far too long, you might think I deserve the day off. What’s it going to hurt if we just shut the doors and skip church for one Sunday anyway? Well, it will hurt Christmas, I tell you! I’m going to be at church on Christmas because I want to really celebrate. I want to celebrate Christ with you and my whole Christian family. All the carols and candles, shopping and shuffling is for naught if we don’t stop and give our focus to Jesus—and not Baby Jesus, but omnipotent Jesus come down to redeem all of creation and time.
Sure, you could read the birth of Christ at home for five minutes and then open gifts for another twenty, but then it’s over. Now I don’t have a problems with gifts at all. I love giving and receiving gifts, but every year no matter what haul comes under your tree, it’s over in a few moments. Don’t let yourself come out of it all disappointed this year; don’t make your Christmas experience about you. Come together with your community of faith for this one special hour. The holiday season is short, but redemption sticks with us forever. Let’s use this Sunday to renew our year round rejoicing for Christ’s life and the salvation He offers us.
Bring your family to church next weekend. We have a service Christmas Eve at 5pm and Christmas morning at 10am. They’re identical services, both with candles, carols, and communion, the traditional story time with Pastor Jeff. Merry Christmas and I’ll see you there.
