distractions and fast food

By Josh Weisbrod in Worship on 10/21/10

If we’re adding to the noise
turn off this song
If we’re adding to the noise
turn off your stereo, radio, video

I dont know
what they’re gonna think of next
genetic engineers of the most high tech
A couple new ways
to fall into debt
I’m a nervous wreck but I’ll bet
that that T.V. set
tells us what we’ve wanted to hear
But none of these sound bites
are coming in clear
From the third world to the corporate ear
we are the symphony of modern humanity.
-Switchfoot

Sometimes in life we can all get a little to distracted. We can have tons of good ideas and vision, but until we limit the distractions in our life we will never achieve what we are meant to. Like the song Adding to the Noise by Switchfoot says, “what’s it gonna take to slow us down, to let the silence spin us around?” This can be difficult though. We live in a world that makes it necessary to be reachable at all times and requires that you consistently go online. Personally I have really struggled in the past month to focus on writing music. I have always loved to write music because I see it as a way of worshiping God. Recently the distractions in life have started to come between me and the worship that I bring to God. Now none of these things are necessarily bad, but the fact that they limit my use of the talents God has given me is bad. I remember when I had no TV and no internet and what I did after work was write music and spend time with my wife. When I look back at that time I see a person who was less distracted and spent more REAL quality time with family and God. That is the life that matched up with the One Month to Live Challenge.

To me it is similar to eating fast food and junk food with preservatives instead of good and healthy food with good ingredients.  The more of the junk food we eat, then the more we crave it, and it becomes a vicious cycle of bad food. The contrast is that when we begin to eat food made with organic ingredients and nutrients it is like our eyes are open. When we put away the distractions of fast and commercial foods then we can realize the greatness that is real ingredients and delicious food. It is the same with our lives. When we put away the distractions in life and focus on the realness and goodness of God and what He has for us, then we begin to live a fulfilling life. In Psalm 63:4-5 David writes, “I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.”

Our life goal should be to live a life that focuses on the worship of God and not the distractions of the world. Whether we are writing music, raising Godly children, glorifying Him with our work, or anything else that we do as worship, we should refrain from the distractions that want to distort that purpose. If I had one month to live I am positive that there are some distractions in my life that would be removed immediately because I know what is truly important in life. I don’t want to get distracted from worshiping the God who loves me and has saved me.
