So I am always on the look for some great rock and roll Christian bands, but this year has seemed somewhat lacking. It is almost as if 2008/2009 was the time for incredible rock albums with bands like Ivoryline and Oh Sleeper releasing heavy rock albums. Thankfully August was a very good month for album releases. Not that I haven’t loved listening to John Mark Mcmillan and NeedToBreathe, but sometimes you just gotta rock. This month I have been rocking to some great releases, and a lot of them have been coming from Tooth and Nail Records.
Ivoryline – Vessels. The band Ivoryline released a great album called There Came A Lion with Tooth and Nail in 2008 which got to #25 on Billboard Top Christian Albums. Now they are back with a new album called Vessels. This album combines pretty good rock riffs with great tone. The subtle metal licks are smoothed over by vocalist Jeremy Grey’s melodic voice. This is good album for those who are a fan of Anberlin and The Wedding.
Sent By Ravens – Our Graceful Words. Another good release this year is by a hard rock band Sent by Ravens. I had actually not listened to any of this band’s music until their new album Our Graceful Words was released. To be honest, I saw a picture of them and thought the skinny jeans would lead to high screamo vocals and depressing songs, but i was totally surprised. This is a band that rocks hard. There are some incredible metal riffs and great vocals. The album focuses on the theme of being on fire for God and strengthening their relationship with Jesus. I can see similarities to Emery.
Write This Down – Write This Down. This self entitled album is the first full length album from this Minnesota rock band. After releasing two EP’s they have released a great rock album. When i saw this cover i almost passed out laughing and crying in awe of how cool the singer of this band looks. If you have not seen the cover then i will tell you it involves a classic car, Jesus look-alike, moccasins, and a panther. If i stopped at the cover i would have never heard what solid rock music this three piece band puts out. With a drummer, guitar, and vocalist this band still manages to put out one heavy tone. This is a great album. The song Renegades is incredible.
keep rocking
