Jeremiah’s Prayer

Jeremiah 32:17 &21-23
“O Sovereign Lord! You have made the heavens and earth by your great power.  Nothing is too hard for you!  You brought Israel out of Egypt with mighty signs and wonders, with great power and overwhelming terror.  You gave the people of Israel this land that you had promised their ancestors long before-a land flowing with milk and honey.  Our ancestors came and conquered it and lived in it, but they refused to obey you or follow your law.”

Our God is powerful.  He made the heavens and the earth, land, sea and creatures.  He made you and me.  He made everything we see, and He created even what we can’t see…things like air, freedom, love, peace and joy.  In the Old Testament, we read of God’s people witnessing God’s power AT WORK.  God’s power was manifested through the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:15), the “healing” of bitter water (Exodus 15:25), the provision of quail and manna from heaven (Exodus 16:13-18) and water from a rock (Exodus 17:6).  Later the Israelites witnessed the miracles of enemy countries being driven out before them, the walls of Jericho falling and the possession of the land that was promised to them.  Over and over God’s people were witness to God’s miraculous power at work, and yet tragically they “refused to follow” God’s law, as over and over they placed their devotion and trust in false gods. They got distracted.  They got comfortable.  They forgot.

This is not unlike us.  We too are witness to God’s power.  We see His creation.  We experience salvation. We receive His love and forgiveness.  We too can look back in our past and recall the power of God at work in our own lives.  His grace.  Maybe his healing power. His deliverance, and His peace.  And yet we overlook His power, we get distracted and comfortable.  We forget what He has done for us and we place our trust and devotion into things other than Him.

My charge to myself and to you today is to stop and remember God’s power at work in your life.  Recall what He has done for you, and evaluate where you have placed your trust and devotion.  Choose to cling to what He promises to Jeremiah regarding His people later in that same chapter. “I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world, is anything too hard for me?  They will be my people, and I will be their God.  And I will give them one heart and mind to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants.” (Jeremiah 32:27 & 38-39)

Make a decision to recall what God has done for you, and have a renewed appreciation for Him.  Trust that nothing is too hard for Him, and worship Him; for your own good and for the good of those who follow you.
