My “walk across the room” story!

By Pastor Di on 3/24/10

The “just walk across the room” series has spurred me to think about the person who walked across the room for me!  Most of us have a story about how someone went out of their way to share Jesus or be an example for him; I thought I would take a moment to share mine.

I was five years old, in kindergarten, and living in Edmonds with my parents.  One day, while playing in the living room of my house, a man came and knocked on our front door.  When my mom answered, the man introduced himself as Dave, from Grace Church.  He explained that one of his duties at Grace Church was to drive a purple bus around to Edmonds neighborhoods and pick up kids for Sunday school.  I remember very clearly, Dave asking my mom if she would be interested in having me picked up and taken to Sunday school.  My mom turned, looked at me, and said “Why don’t you ask her?”

That began the new Sunday morning ritual of my mom getting me up on Sunday mornings and walking me down to the end of our driveway to be picked up by the purple Sunday school bus and taken to church each week.  It wasn’t long after that I raised my hand during Sunday school in response to an invitation to ask Jesus into my heart and life.  I can still remember praying that prayer as a five year old; it literally changed the rest of my life.  Soon, my mom started to wonder what the place was like that she was sending her daughter to every week; and she began to come to church too.  And in the weeks to follow, Patty also gave her life to Jesus.  My baby brother was pretty much raised going to church, and we continued to go every week, even finding a new church after moving to Everett a few years later.

I wonder if Dave has any idea what an impact his “walk across the room” had on my family?  Does he have any idea that I not only gave my life to Jesus as a five year old, but that I went on to continue serving Him through elementary, middle and high school?  How could he know that I went to Bible College, am a licensed minister, and that I have been involved in ministry for the past 20 years?  He couldn’t know.  Our lives intersected briefly when he knocked on my door, and drove the bus that took me to church. His willingness to knock on my front door, not only brought me, my mom and my brother to church; but the ripple effects continue.  We in turn have brought people to Jesus; and for my brother and I, that includes our children first and foremost!  I don’t know where Dave is today, but to all of you who are “walking across the room,” keep it up!  Whether you see it or not, you ARE making a difference!

keep walking,
di
