I have been an Avett Brothers fan for while now, and the reason is the poetic nature of their lyrics. There is a genuine feeling to them that is really refreshing. If you have never heard of the Avett brothers, then i could describe them as a bluegrass/folk/indie. They are a really talented band with incredible musicians. One of my favorite Avett Brothers songs has always been the Weight of Lies off of their Emotionalism album. The lyrics off of the chorus are really the best part:
The weight of lies will bring you down
And follow you to every town
Cause nothing happens here that doesn’t happen there.
So when you run make sure you run
To something and not away from
Cause lies don’t need an aeroplane to chase you anywhere
The truth in this song seems pretty self evident. When we let the lies of sin consume our lives they truly become like a weight the follows us around. Psalms 34 says: “Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.”
What we should be doing is running to God and truth rather than simply running from our lies. Just like the song says, lies don’t need an airplane to chase you down. We need to leave behind the lies of sin and run to the truth that is Jesus Christ.
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:6-7
